Olavi Vuorisalo

Olavi Paavo Vuorisalo (born April 5, 1933 in Kuusisto ) is a former Finnish middle-distance runner. He mainly started in 1,500-meter running competitions.

Vuorisalo was fifth at the 1958 European Championships in Stockholm. Brian Hewson from Britain won the title . Before that, he had won the Finnish championship title over 1500 meters four times in a row between 1955 and 1958. On July 11, 1957, he took part in the 1500-meter run in Turku , in which his compatriots Olavi Salsola and Olavi Salonen set a new world record with 3: 40.2 minutes (see also the 1500-meter world record run in Turku 1957 ) . Vuorisalo himself also beat the previous world record of the Hungarian István Rózsavölgyi with 3: 40.3 minutes . Saolsola and Salonen lost their world record a day later to Stanislav Jungwirth from Czechoslovakia, who ran the 1500 meters in 3: 38.1 minutes in Stará Boleslav . Vuorisalo was named Sportsman of the Year in Finland in 1957. In 1959, 1960 and 1961 Vuorisalo was Finnish runner-up. In 1960 Vuorisalo took part in the Olympic Games in Rome , but clearly missed the final. In 1964 he was Finnish champion in the 1500 meters for the fifth time.

Vuroisalo was a member of the Naantalin Löyly association from Naantali .
