Olavi Vihtori Kalervo Salonen (born December 20, 1933 in Noormarkku ) is a former Finnish middle-distance runner who held the world record over 1500 meters for one day in 1957 .

Career

Salonen's parade routes were the 800 and 1500 meters. Between 1958 and 1965 he won twelve Finnish championship titles over these distances. Salonen celebrated its greatest success as early as 1957. On July 11, 1957, Salonen took part in a 1,500 meter run in Turku . Salonen won at the same time as his compatriot Olavi Salsola in the new world record time of 3: 40.2 minutes. The third of the run, Olavi Vuorisalo , who also came from Finland , also stayed below the old world record time of 3: 40.6 minutes, set by the Hungarian István Rózsavölgyi in August 1956. Salonen and Salsola lost their world record to Stanislav Jungwirth just a day later , who ran the 1500 meters in 3: 38.1 minutes in a run in his home country Czechoslovakia (see also the 1500-meter world record run in Turku 1957 ).

At the European Athletics Championships in Belgrade in 1962 , Salonen came fourth in the 800-meter run, where he crossed the finish line at the same time as second Valeri Bulischew from the USSR and third Paul Schmidt from Germany. The German Manfred Matuschewski won the race . In 1963 Salonen won the Nordic Championship over 1500 meters. At the age of 31 he was last Finnish champion over 1500 meters. In 2009 he was awarded the Pro Urheilu Prize. Salonen took part in the Olympic Games in 1960 and 1964 without reaching the final.

During his career Salonen belonged to the associations Noormarkun Nopsa, Rosenlewin Urheilijat-38 in Pori , Kaipolan Vire and Valkeakosken Haka .
