Olavi Salsola

Olavi Armas Tapani Salsola (born December 26, 1933 in Keuruu , † October 8, 1995 in Rauma ) was a Finnish middle-distance runner . In 1957 he and his compatriot Olavi Salonen held the world record over 1500 meters for one day .

Salsola took part in the 1956 Summer Games in Melbourne . But he failed over 1500 meters in the lead. In 1957 Salsola became Finnish champions for the second time since 1955 in the 800-meter distance. On July 11, 1957, he started in Turku in a 1500-meter run. Salsola won this run at the same time as Olavi Salonen . The 3: 40.2 minutes achieved in the process meant a new world record. Third in this race - Olavi Vuorisalo (3: 40.3 minutes) - also stayed below the old world record (3: 40.6 minutes) set by Hungarian István Rózsavölgyi in August 1956. The next day, Salonen and Salsola lost the 1500 meter world record to the Czechoslovak Stanislav Jungwirth , who ran the 1500 meters in 3: 38.1 minutes in Stará Boleslav . In the 1957 Finnish Athlete of the Year award , Salsola came in fifth. Olavi Vuorisalo received the title. 1958 Salsola reached a twelfth place at the European Championships in Stockholm .
