Herbert Elliott AC , MBE (born February 25, 1938 in Perth , Australia ) is a former Australian athlete (middle distance runner) who won gold over 1500 meters at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome with a new world record time of 3: 35.6 min.

Life

Elliott was a student of Percy Cerutty . This introduced unusual training methods. Sand dune runs were a specialty of Cerutty. Through block training Cerutty and Elliot managed to achieve the desired times in the important races, although the Australian season (southern hemisphere) actually contradicts this.

Elliott's specialty routes were the 1,500 meters and the mile. During his career, he lost only one race over the 1,500 meter distance. On August 6, 1958, he set a new world record over the mile in 3: 54.5 minutes. On August 28 of the same year, he also broke the record over the 1,500 meter distance in Gothenburg in 3: 36.0 minutes . At the Commonwealth Games (then Empire Games) in Cardiff ( Wales ) in 1958 , Elliott won the 880 yard in 1:49 minutes and the mile in 3:59 minutes. In the same year he was honored with the Associated Press' Athlete of the Year award .

In 1960 Elliott was back in top form and announced even before the Olympic Games : If you want to beat me, you have to run a world record! He finally won the 1500 meter race on September 6, 1960 in Rome with a new world record time of 3: 35.6 minutes.

In May 1961 Elliott resigned from active competitive sports, studied at the University of Cambridge .

Since May 2005 he has been Vice President of the Fortescue Metals Group , the fifth largest iron mining company in the world, and since March 2007 he has chaired the Supervisory Board. Before that, he worked for the sporting goods manufacturer Puma , where he was ultimately Chief Executive for the North American market. Elliott was instrumental in organizing the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney for the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC). He was also the final runner in the Olympic torch relay.
