Peter Rono
Peter Kipchumba Rono (born July 31, 1967 in Kapsabet ) is a former Kenyan middle-distance runner and Olympic champion over 1500 meters .
Rono had a short but steep athletic career from 1984 to 1988. In 1984, at the age of 17, he achieved a double success over 1500 and 5000 meters at the Junior World Championships , and in 1985 he became the African cross-country champion in Nairobi . At the Junior World Championships in Athens in 1986 he won silver, and at the World Championships in Rome in 1987 he reached the semi-finals.
He had his greatest success at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . Here he won the gold medal over 1500 meters in front of the favorite British Peter Elliott and Jens-Peter Herold from the GDR.
In addition to his studies at Mount Saint Mary's College, he continued his sporting career with varying degrees of success. In 1989 he won silver at the Universiade , and in 1991 he was eliminated in the semifinals of the World Championships in Tokyo . He later became a trainer at his alma mater. Today he is employed by the shoe manufacturer New Balance .
