Hechtel is a place in the Belgian province of Limburg and has been part of the municipality of Hechtel-Eksel since 1977 with the neighboring Eksel . The community has around 11,500 inhabitants.

Hechtel is located on the junction of the main road from Hasselt (Belgium) to Eindhoven in the Netherlands and the main road from Maaseik an der Maas to Leopoldsburg .

During the Second World War , German occupation troops succeeded in the battle for Hechtel in September 1944 in holding the traffic junction and bringing the Allied deployment to a halt. The place was almost completely destroyed during the fighting.

A monument in the forest near Hechtel reminds us that 204 members of the resistance were executed in the village during the war and buried in the forest.
