Matthew Centrowitz (born October 18, 1989 in Beltsville , Maryland ) is an American middle-distance runner . He was the 2016 Olympic champion in the 1,500 meter run.

Life

His father Matt Centrowitz is a track and field trainer and was part of the US Olympic squad as a medium and long-distance runner in 1976 and 1980. Matthew Centrowitz is 1.75 m tall and weighs 60 kg (as of 2017). He started for the "Nike Oregon Project" and is trained by Alberto Salazar (previously by Vince Lamanna).

In 2007 he was the Pan-American Junior Champion over 1500 meters and in 2008 US Junior Champion over 5000 meters .

In 2011 he became US and NCAA champions over 1,500 meters and won bronze at the World Championships in Daegu . In 2012 he finished seventh over the same distance at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul . At the Olympic Games in London , he finished fourth.

In 2013 he won silver over 1500 meters at the World Championships in Moscow .

In 2016 he won the 1500 meters at the World Indoor Championships in Portland . In the same year he celebrated the most important success of his career up to then by winning the gold medal in the 1,500 meter run at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .
