Driss Maazouzi

Driss Maazouzi (born October 20, 1969 in Meknes ) is a French medium and long-distance runner of Moroccan origin, who was particularly successful in the 1500 meter run .

Life

Starting for his home country Morocco, he finished tenth over 1500 meters at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta . A year later he won the gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in Bari at the same distance, while he was eliminated in the semifinals at the 1997 World Championships in Athens . At the 1999 World Championships in Seville , he finished eighth.

Although Maazouzi had already taken on French citizenship in 1996 , he only received the international right to start France in August 2000. A short time later, he finished eleventh over 1500 meters at the Olympic Games in Sydney .

Maazouzi celebrated one of the greatest successes of his career at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton . There he won the bronze medal in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3: 31.54 minutes behind Hicham El Guerrouj and Bernard Lagat . In 2003 he became indoor world champion over 1500 meters in Moscow . In a time of 3: 42.59 min, he could just beat Lagat this time.

In addition, Maazouzi was French champion in the 1,500 meter run seven times in a row from 1995 to 2001. In cross-country he won five national championship titles on the short distance (1998-2000, 2002, 2008) as well as the bronze medal in the long distance at the European Cross Country Championships in 2004 and 2005.

Driss Maazouzi is 1.80 m tall and has a competition weight of 65 kg.
