Michael Hillardt

Michael Hillardt ( Michael Howard "Mike" Hillardt ; born January 22, 1961 in Brisbane ) is a former Australian middle-distance runner of Austrian descent.

life and career

Hillardt, who was a successful athlete in his youth, was discovered in 1977 by Max Lakitsch , member of the Upper Austrian state parliament , and directed to Austria. Here he joined the athletics department of the ATSV Linz and subsequently appeared for it.

At the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, he was fifth over 1500 meters . He reached the semifinals at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki over 800 meters and at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 over 1500 meters.

He had his greatest international success the following year when he won the 1500 meters at the World Indoor Games in Paris . Over the same distance he was eighth at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh , fifth at the 1987 World Indoor Championships in Indianapolis and seventh at the 1987 World Championships in Rome .

Twice he was national champion over 800 meters (1981, 1983) and eight times over 1500 meters (1980, 1982-1988).
