Deresse Mekonnen (born October 20, 1987 in Sheno , Oromia ) is an Ethiopian track and field athlete who became world indoor champion in the 1500 meter run in 2008 .

Mekonnen finished fifth at the 2007 African Games . At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka , he was eliminated in the preliminary stages.

The 2008 World Indoor Championships took place in Valencia . There Mekonnen won ahead of the Kenyan Daniel Kipchirchir Komen , followed by Juan Carlos Higuero who won the sprint for third place against Arturo Casado . After the race, to the cheers of the Spanish spectators, it was announced that Komen had won in front of Higuero and Casado and that Mekonnen had been disqualified for stepping on the interior border. The disqualification was withdrawn, Mekonnen received gold, Komen silver and Higuero bronze. At the 2008 Olympic Games , Mekonnen was seventh in the second semi-final in 3: 37.85 minutes.

At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, he won his first outdoor medal. He finished second in the 1500 meter run.

Deresse Mekonnen is 1.75 m tall and has a competition weight of 60 kg.
