Maximilian Rueß

Maximilian Rueß (born November 8, 1925 in Oberstdorf ; † February 16, 1990 in Munich ) was a German sculptor and painter .

Rueß studied sculpture in Munich from 1947 to 1950. First with Maria Weber and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich as a master student of Josef Wackerle . From 1950 to 1969, Rueß lived and worked in Munich, where he married Ursula Reich in 1960. In 1968, Rueß acquired an old farmstead in Bolsterlang near Fischen im Allgäu , which he expanded into a home and studio and moved into in 1969.

In addition to numerous sculptures and paintings, Rueß also designed public spaces, fountains and walls , especially in the Allgäu . His most important work is the almost six meter high courtyard fountain at Schloss Zeil near Leutkirch , which was created between 1982 and 1989 .

After his death, Rueß's widow gave a large part of his artistic estate, consisting of over 50 paintings and sculptures, to the Allgäu Museum Kempten as part of a foundation (Maximilian-Rueß-Stiftung) . In 2005 the city of Kempten compiled a complete directory of the works of Maximilian Rueß and in 2008 the Kunsthalle Kempten showed a retrospective .

Awards and exhibitions

In 1964, Rueß received the art prize of the city of Kempten (Allgäu) , in 1967 the art prizes of the administrative district of Swabia and the market in Oberstdorf and in 1978 the art prize of the diocese of Augsburg . A room was dedicated to Rueß in the local history museum in Oberstdorf.

Rueß was able to show his works at solo exhibitions in Oberstdorf, Kempten, Munich, Windhoek , Johannesburg , Cape Town , Ulm , Heidelberg , Stuttgart , Berlin , Immenstadt and Sonthofen .
