He had already had a church and a monastery built beforehand. The surrounding gardens from the Renaissance period were adapted to the taste of the respective time in the Baroque, 19th and 20th centuries, but changed again in the spirit of the Renaissance since the 1930s.

The current owner is Prince Erich von Waldburg zu Zeil und Trauchburg . The castle, which is used by the family as a private apartment and by the property management, cannot be viewed. However, the park and the viewing terrace are open to the public all year round. The majority of the castle is rented out as individual residential units.

Part of the palace complex is the parish church of St. Maria (Assumption of Mary). Zeil Castle is also an officially named part of the municipality of Leutkirch in the Allgäu.

The small Josefskapelle in the forest northeast of the castle was built from wood in 1858.
