Schmidsfelden is a residential area in the district of Winterstetten, part of Leutkirch im Allgäu in Baden-Württemberg .

Glassmaker village

Schmidsfelden is a small glassmaking village about 13 kilometers southeast of Leutkirch im Allgäu at 760  m above sea level. NN . The village is located directly on the Württemberg-Bavarian border at the confluence of the Kürnach and Eschach . It consists of the actual glassworks, a warehouse and an administration building as well as workers' houses, a manor house and a chapel. A stamp mill on a side canal of the Eschach is no longer preserved .

The Schmidsfelden glassworks was set up on the site of the Ratzenmühle by Johann Balthasar von Schmidsfeld in 1825 and 1826 and operated by his heirs until 1898. The company replaced the Schmidsche glassworks in Eisenbach and thus represents the last link in a chain of older steelworks.

The glassworks is a good example of the fate of traditional craft businesses during the period of industrialization. Due to the competition of the Rhineland and Saxon glassworks with the neighborhood to the coal and chemical industry as well as the lack of a rail connection, there was a decline and despite changes in the range and attempts at technical innovations, the ironworks came to an end in 1898.

On June 1, 1972, the municipality of Winterstetten was incorporated into the town of Leutkirch in the Allgäu and is now a town within the meaning of the Baden-Wuerttemberg municipal code with a local council and a mayor.

The glassworks was opened in 1998 on the initiative of Heimatpflege Leutkirch e. V. renovated and saved from deterioration. Archaeological excavations were also necessary to examine an auxiliary furnace in the hut. The glassworks is now a museum; Visitors can have a demonstration of the craft in the glass blowing workshop.
