Zeil Castle Fountain 2007

The fountain complex at Schloss Zeil (also called Marienbrunnen ) is a fountain created by Maximilian Rueß between 1982 and 1989 in the inner courtyard of Schloss Zeil near Leutkirch in the Allgäu . The fountain is the main work of Rueß.

description

The artist had his studio in Bolsterlang expanded for the commission . The client Georg von Waldburg zu Zeil und Trauchburg caused the inner courtyard of the four-wing complex, which was completed in 1888, to be lowered due to the clear height of the fountain of 5.40 meters.

The fountain system consists mainly of the materials bronze and marble and is themed “Maria protector of the princely family and the landscape” . In the center of the fountain there is a tree of life with a bowl of water. On the tree of life there is a Madonna in a rose bush. In the fountain, Rueß combines the 1000-year history of the noble house with Christian themes and allegories of the four seasons. Seven important representatives of the Waldburg-Zeil aristocratic family are depicted on three main axes of the fountain.

The seven representatives are by name the builder of Froben von Waldburg-Zeil Castle (1569–1614), represented by the rider with the lance. To the left of the viewer of the rider Froben is a group of three, seated on the stool in front of Wilhelm the Elder , who was the first representative of the house to receive the office of imperial inheritance from Emperor Charles V in Toledo in 1526 and who was governor of the Duchy of Württemberg. Behind him you can see the stewardess Georg I von Waldburg († 1467), the progenitor of the Georgian line, which is still flourishing today, and Eberhard II von Waldburg , Prince-Bishop of Constance from 1248 to 1274, recognizable by the bishop's staff. To the right of the viewer of the rider Froben is another group of three. You can see Cardinal Otto von Waldburg , Bishop of Augsburg , left behind the Cardinal the Truchsess Georg III. von Waldburg-Zeil , known as Bauernjörg and field captain of the Swabian Confederation in the Peasants' War, and finally, to the right of Bauernjörg, his ancestor, Eberhard von Waldburg († 1234), since 1214 head of the Duchy of Swabia . The falconer on the fourth main axis of the fountain, who rides in the women's seat in the opposite direction of Froben's figure, symbolizes the women of the Waldburg family.

The individual figures and elements of the fountain were cast in the Herbich art foundry in Gernlinden in the Fürstenfeldbruck district . Several sculptures with animal motifs are placed around the fountain. They are intended to indicate the connection between the Waldburg-Zeil family and nature.
