The Claudia Quintet is an American jazz ensemble led by drummer and composer John Hollenbeck .

Band history

The Claudia Quintet was founded in 1997 by John Hollenbeck; supposedly it came out of the trio The Refuseniks . Hollenbeck describes his music as “ eclectic post-jazz ”, which mixes “ minimal , avant-garde rock, fiery improvisation and razor-sharp composition”, with references to contemporary classical music, serialism and gamelan music an extension of the cool jazz of the 1950s; " Sonic tapestries that stretch the boundaries of chamber jazz. Billboard named the ensemble's second album, I, Claudia , one of the best of 2004,“ a sumptuous, postmodern chamber jazz ”. During the recording sessions for their third album, semi-formal (dt. Semi-formally , 2005), the quintet expanded its instruments u. a. to keyboards , pedal steel guitar , baritone horn and the Casio SK-1.

On the occasion of the 100th birthday of the American poet Kenneth Patchen , they received a composition commission from the University of Rochester , which would be included in the album What Is the Beautiful? where Patchen's poems are combined with music, with Theo Bleckmann and Kurt Elling as guest vocalists.
