The National Park Andohahela is a National Park of stage II of the IUCN classification services in the south of Madagascar . Along with five other national parks, he was named 2007 Rainforests of Atsinanana in the UNESCO - World Heritage List was added.

geography

It is located in the Androy region , halfway between the Tolagnaro ( Fort-Dauphin ) and Amboasary Sud districts , near National Road 13. The park consists of three non-contiguous areas with a total area of ​​76,020 hectares at an altitude between 120 and 1972 m.

history

Part of today's national park was placed under protection as early as 1939. This area was 30,000 hectares. In 1966 the protection area was enlarged to the present area and in 1997 Andohahela became a national park.

In 2007, the Atsinanana rainforests became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Andohahela National Park is one of these rainforests.

Flora Fauna

12 species of lemurs , 129 species of birds, 75 species of reptiles and 50 species of amphibians as well as more than 1000 species of plants live in the park .

There are three different ecosystems in the national park:

• moist tropical forest, in the east
• dry thorn bush land
• and a transition area of ​​dry forest between these two biotopes.
