Tsingy de Namoroka is a national park with special protection status in the Boeny region in northwest Madagascar . Its landscape consists of limestone rocks, which are particularly impressively carved up in low tsingys.
geography
It is located in the Soalala district . The Baie de Baly National Park is also nearby , with which it forms a unit.
Flora and fauna
218 plant species have been identified in the national park, 106 of which are endemic.
81 species of birds, 31 of which are found only in Madagascar and 23 others are endemic to the surrounding islands. Three of these species are listed in the IUCN : the Madagascar goshawk ( Accipiter henstii ), crested ibis ( Lophotibis cristata ) and yellow-bellied jala ( Philepitta schlegeli ). Most species overwinter here in the dry season.
There are also eight species of lemurs in the park. a. the Von der Decken's sifaka and Red Maki , five amphibian species as Maskarenenfrosch , Frog Mantidactylus biporus and 30 reptile species .
getting there
The dry season May to October is the best time to reach the national park by road. It is 185 km from Mahajanga to Soalala. With dhows you can also reach it from Mahajanga by ship.
particularities
Due to the belief of the local population, pork is not allowed in the national park. When arriving by ship from Mahajanga , pistachios are also taboo.
