The Gelbbauchjala ( Philepitta schlegeli ) is endemic to Madagascar occurring bird art of the genus Philepitta from the family of asity (Philepittidae). The specific epithet is based on the name of the German ornithologist and first descriptor Hermann Schlegel .

features

Yellow-bellied jalas reach a body length of 12.5 to 14.0 centimeters. The control springs are very short. Between the sexes there is at times a clear sexual dimorphism in terms of plumage color . Only the males show colorful plumage during the courtship and breeding season. You then have a jet black head, from which a flap of skin with four turquoise spots, which are connected by cobalt blue stripes around the eye, clearly stands out. The eye ring is also turquoise. Breast and belly are bright yellow, the rest of the plumage predominantly dull olive green. During the rest of the time, the head plumage is also olive-green, lightly speckled brown and there are no colorful spots. The underside is matt yellow and has some light brown speckles. Both sexes are then very similar. In the female, only the brown speckles on the head are missing.

distribution and habitat

The distribution area of the yellow-bellied jala is in northwest Madagascar. It prefers to colonize dry forest areas and karst valleys.

Way of life

The birds feed on various fruits and nectar, for example from dog poison plants (Apocynaceae). Insects are also accepted as food during the periods of low fruit yield . The main breeding season falls from October to December. The nest is made from small strips of leaves, fragments of bark and moss and woven with spider threads. Details on the breeding behavior are not available.

Danger

The yellow-bellied jala occurs sparsely in the national parks and the adjacent areas in northwest Madagascar. Therefore, a significant genetic exchange between the populations is not sufficiently ensured. It is therefore classified by the World Conservation Organization IUCN as NT IUCN 3 1st svgnear threatened ”.
