Tolagnaro (also Tôlan̈aro or Taolanaro , formerly Fort-Dauphin ) is a city in the southeast of Madagascar . It is the capital of the Anosy region and is located in the former province of Toliara . The capital Antananarivo is 1122 km away.
population
The area is inhabited by the Antanosy people. The 1975 census counted 19,605 inhabitants, and the 1993 census was already 30,690. In mid-2001 it had 39,000 inhabitants. Today (2014) the population is likely to be a lot higher, since mining has boomed in the area and also attracts workers from other parts of the country and from abroad.
Prostitution has also expanded due to the presence of numerous miners. The health authorities therefore fear that Tôlanaro could become the "gateway" for HIV / AIDS, which has hitherto hardly been widespread in Madagascar.
The place has been the seat of a Catholic bishop since 1955.
history
The settlement was originally called Tholongar . In 1504, eighty Portuguese were stranded there. They built a fort that existed until 1527. After the forcible expulsion of the Portuguese, there was no further European settlement until September 24, 1642. At that time, a group of French arrived, who were settled under the leadership of the Société française de l'Orient . They built a fort, which was first called Fort Flacourt . The fort was renamed Fort-Dauphin a short time later . The settlement was destroyed by the locals in 1674 after quarrels with the French. Another attempt at settlement by the French in 1768 was canceled in 1771. It was not until the French conquest of the island in 1895/1896 that the place came under European rule again. From 1897 until independence in 1960, the French had a military garrison in the city.
economy
For a long time, the port of Tôlanaro served as a gateway to the world, primarily for the export of lobsters and crabs as well as dried algae, and tourism was also of great importance. Since the Rio Tinto company has been mining titanium iron ore in the area, the raw materials sector has been booming, and with it the previously remote city.
Nature reserves
- The National Park Andohahela is located about 40 km northwest of the city.
- The nature reserve Cap Sainte Marie is 230 km south of Fort-Dauphin.
- the private Berenty Reserve is 75 km west of Amboasary Sud
Infrastructure
The place is at the end of the two national roads RN 12a and RN 13 , both of which are in poor condition. The Tolagnaro airport is located west of the city and has connections with the capital and Toliara . The place also has a hospital.
climate
The city receives enough rain (around 1700 mm per year) because of the nearby mountains and is therefore much greener and more fertile than most areas in southern Madagascar. The average temperature is around 23 ° and fluctuates between 20 ° and 26 ° per month. The city is dominated by the Pic St. Louis (529 m above sea level) north of the city.
