Toliara (also called Tuléar) is a city in the southwest of Madagascar . It is the capital of the homonymous province of Toliara and the Atsimo-Andrefana region . It is located on the Mozambique Strait between the Fiherenana and Onilahy rivers .
population
The majority of the population belongs to the Vezo people . There are, however, numerous immigrants from other regions of the island and from the Indian subcontinent . The city had 45,676 in the 1975 census and 80,826 in 1993. Today one reckons with around 160,000 residents.
history
The name means "where you can anchor well". The city was founded in the Middle Ages and was ruled by the Mahafaly from the 16th century until the Merina conquest in 1835 . European settlements failed because of the climate and malaria . Only one pirate base existed for a long time. The French conquered the city in 1895 and named it Tuléar .
In 1957 the Roman Catholic diocese of Tuléar was established in Toliara, and in 2003 it was elevated to the status of the Archdiocese of Toliara .
On February 23, 2013, Toliara was devastated by Cyclone Haruna and the infrastructure suffered greatly.
economy
Toliara is an important port and trading center. Important commercial goods include cotton, peanuts, rice, soap and sisal . A brewery and a chewing tobacco factory are the only major industrial operations. Trade is almost entirely in the hands of Indians and Pakistanis.
Infrastructure
There is a well-developed road via Fianarantsoa to Antananarivo , Route Nationale (RN) 7 . The RN 9 leads north and is in poor condition. There is a regional airport to the southeast. There is also a university and several hospitals and clinics.
Attractions
The city itself has no major attractions. There is a small oceanographic museum, the Station Marine , and the Musée Mahafaly-Sakalava , a folklore museum . There are numerous excellent bathing beaches north of Toliara.
Toilara is the starting point for trips to the Tsimanampetsotsa National Park, a little further south .
