Paul Kipketer Korir (born July 15, 1977 in Kipkoror , Nandi County ) is a former Kenyan track and field athlete who competed in medium-distance runs . In 2004 he became indoor world champion over 1500 meters .

Life

Paul Korir comes from the former Rift Valley Province in Kenya. Born the oldest of eight sons to a farmer, he attended Kilibwoni High School, which he graduated in 1996.

Korir has been married to Edna Chesang since 2002. In the same year their daughter, Mercy Cheruto, was born. You live in his hometown Kipkoror.

Athletic career

Korir began running training in elementary school, also benefiting from the long way to school. At district championships he was soon able to achieve top positions over 800 meters , the distance he initially specialized in. At a meeting in 2000, he ran into second place in 1: 45.60 minutes and thus caught the attention of marathon runner Moses Tanui , who referred him to the Italian Federico Rosa and his Fila Club. As a result, Korir took part in races in Italy throughout the summer and ultimately set a personal best of 1: 44.21 minutes in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. In spring 2001 he ran his indoor best time of 1: 51.67 minutes at a meeting in Dortmund, after he had previously changed his management team. In the two following seasons, however, the successes were largely absent and he could no longer undercut the 1: 45.00 minute mark. On the advice of his coach Moses Kiptanui at the time , he switched to the 1500 meter distance at the end of 2002.

Within one season he improved his best time by more than eight seconds to 3: 30.72 minutes. In the national decision-making competitions he prevailed against the competition and qualified for the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis . There he was fourth in the final in 3: 33.47 min. In October he then won the Africa Games in Abuja, Nigeria. In spring 2004 he celebrated his greatest sporting success with the gold medal at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest . In a tactical race, he was only three hundredths of a second ahead of second-placed Iwan Heschko from Ukraine. He then missed qualifying for the Olympic Games in Athens , as Korir just failed to participate in the decisive national competition in fourth. One month after missing participation, he won the African Championships in Brazzaville . It was his last international championships.

During the seasons Korir lived and trained in London.
