Bernard Kipchirchir Lagat (born December 12, 1974 in Kapsabet ) is an American middle and long distance runner of Kenyan origin. He was world champion over 1500 and 5000 meters and two-time Olympic medalist.

Life

Lagat attended as the previous Kenyan sports personalities Henry Rono and Mike Boit , the Washington State University until he there in 2000 in the field of Management Information Systems graduate. In 2003 he became a US citizen. Since 2004 he has also started for the USA. Lagat lives in Tucson and Tübingen with his wife and son. He is 1.73 m tall and weighs 61 kg.

Career

His first major sporting success was the victory in the 1500 meter run at the World Student Games in 1999, which also qualified him for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. There he won the bronze medal over 1500 meters behind Noah Ngeny (KEN) and Hicham El Guerrouj (MAR).

At the World Championships in Edmonton , he won silver as well as at the 2002 World Cup in Madrid and at the African Championships in Tunis . At the World Indoor Championships he won silver over 1500 meters in Birmingham in 2003 and gold over 3000 meters in Budapest in 2004 .

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, he won the silver medal behind Hicham El Guerrouj (MAR) and in front of Rui Silva (POR). Its start had long been questionable as it tested positive for erythropoietin (EPO) in August 2003 , which resulted in a ban. Only the B-sample gave a negative result.

At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka he was world champion over 1500 meters in 3: 34.77 min and over 5000 meters in 13: 45.87 min. At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, however, he did not reach the final over 1500 meters and only ninth place over 5000 meters.

In 2009 he won the bronze medal over 1500 meters and the silver medal over 5000 meters at the World Championships in Berlin . In 2010 in Doha he became indoor world champion over 3000 meters for the second time. At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, Lagat was only beaten by Mo Farah over 5000 meters and won the silver medal with a time of 13: 23.64 minutes.

In 2012 he defended his 3000 meter title at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul . At the Olympic Games in London, he was fourth over 5000 meters.
