Yobes Ondieki

Yobes Ondieki (born February 21, 1961 in Kisii , Nyanza Province ) is a former Kenyan athlete and was the first person to complete the 10,000 meters under 27 minutes.

Ondieki celebrated one of his greatest successes in the 5000 meter run at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo . There he won the gold medal. In 13: 14.45 minutes, he also set a new championship record. In the same year he set his best time over this distance with 13: 01.82 minutes.

At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona he belonged to the top five group until the end, but on the home straight he was not only overtaken by the winner Dieter Baumann , but also by the other runners and had to be satisfied with 5th place.

The Kenyan made the leap into the history books on July 10, 1993 at the Bislett Games in Oslo . There he set a new world record over 10,000 meters and cracked Richard Chelimo's record, which was only five days old . With a time of 26: 58.38 minutes, Ondieki was the first person to stay below the 27-minute mark. In the meantime, more than 40 other runners have succeeded.

Ondieki was married to the top Australian runner Lisa Martin-Ondieki . A daughter emerged from the now divorced relationship.
