Timothy Cheruiyot (born November 20, 1995 ) is a Kenyan middle-distance runner who specializes in the 1,500 meter run .

Athletic career

Timothy Cheruiyot gained his first experience in international championships at the World Relays 2015 in the Bahamas , where he won the silver medal behind the team from the United States in 9: 17.20 minutes with the Kenyan distance relay. Over 1500 meters he qualified for the World Championships in Beijing , where he finished seventh in the final in 3: 36.05 minutes. The following year he won the silver medal behind the Moroccan Fouad Elkaam at the African Championships in Durban .

In 2017 he again took part in the World Championships in London , where he won the silver medal behind his compatriot Elijah Motonei Manangoi with a time of 3: 33.99 min in the final . In 2018 he took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast , where he again won the silver medal behind Manangoi in 3: 35.17 minutes. In the same year he also finished second at the African Championships in Asaba behind Manangoi in 3: 35.93 minutes.

In 2017 and 2018 Cheruiyot was Kenyan champion in the 1500 meter run, in 2019 he won the 800 meters. In 2017 he won the IAAF Diamond Race . In 2019 he lived up to his role as a favorite at the World Championships in Doha and won the world title on October 6th.
