After the race, the Netherlands protested for their athlete Richard Douma because he stumbled after a push by Uganda runner Ronald Musagalas and fell fifty meters from the finish line. The IAAF decided not to disqualify Musagala, but to give Douma as an additional participant a right to start in the semi-finals.

final
August 13, 2017, 8:30 p.m. local time (9:30 p.m. CEST )
Again this year, favorites were the two first-placed Kenyans at the last World Championships, Asbel Kiprop - also world champions from 2013 - and Elijah Manangoi. The next placed at the last World Cup, Abdalaati Iguider from Morocco, was also one of the favorites. Among the participants was the US Olympic champion of 2016 and runner-up world champion in 2013 Matt Centrowitz. Competition from Europe was expected from the strong European champion 2016 Filip Ingebrigtsen from Norway. Centrowitz - in the preliminary stages - and Iguider - in the semifinals - had already been eliminated.
The final didn't start very quickly, the intermediate time after the first four hundred meters was 1: 01.63 minutes. In the second round, the two Kenyans Timothy Cheruiyot and Manangoi took the lead. They increased the pace a lot and there was a small gap to the rest of the field. The double world champion of 2013 and 2015 Kiprop soon caught up with his leading compatriots. Ingebrigtsen, the Spaniard Adel Mechaal and the Czech Jakub Holuša followed a little further. The lap time for the second four hundred meters was 55.96 s. At the beginning of the last lap the three pursuers had caught up with the Kenyans again. Round three was completed in 56.09 s. On the back straight, the six leaders with Cheruiyot in the lead were still close together, ahead of Manangoi, Ingebrigtsen, Kiprop, Mechaal and Holuša. In the target corner, Kiprop could no longer keep the pace. Cheruiyot and Manangoi pulled away easily, Ingebrigtsen and Mechaal followed closely behind, while Holuša also got into trouble. At the beginning of the home stretch Ingebrigtsen was again close behind Manangoi, but the two Kenyans finally made the race between themselves. Elijah Manangoi was the strongest in the sprint and crossed the finish line as the new world champion. Timothy Cheruiyot was second ahead of Filip Ingebrigtsen. Adel Mechaal was fourth, with Jakub Holuša in fifth, followed by Sadik Mikhou from Bahrain and Marcin Lewandowski from Poland.
