Taresa Tolosa made his national breakthrough in the 1500 meters in 2016. In the spring he started over this distance at the African Championships in Durban, where he made it directly to the finals in his first international championship race, where he finished fifth in 3: 42.23 minutes. He then qualified for the U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, where he achieved his greatest sporting success to date by winning the silver medal.
In 2017 he won the national championships in May and was also able to compete in the world championships in London in August . Before that, he set his personal best of 3: 34.47 minutes in June. However, he could not finish the preliminary run and was eliminated in the first round. In 2018 he competed at the African Championships in Asaba, Nigeria, where he finished eleventh in 3: 49.48 minutes. Afterwards, after just one competition in the spring, he missed the entire 2019 season and was not able to start again until 2020 without being able to build on the performances he had already shown.
