Life
Richard Douma comes from Zaandam, in the province of Noord-Holland . From an early age he was a sports enthusiast, initially playing football, ice hockey and motor sports before his father registered him for a run in 2009, where he discovered his passion for athletics. His achievements made his future coach Louis Dam aware of him and so Douma started training at AV Zaanland from 2010 under Dam's guidance.
Athletic career
In 2011, at the age of 18, Douma took part in the Dutch championships, where he finished sixth over 3000 meters obstacle. In 2012 he became two-time Dutch U20 indoor champion and in summer also won the national championship title in the same age group outdoors. In 2013 he took part in the U23 European Championships in Tampere, Finland, where he finished twelfth over 1500 meters. Two years he appeared again at the U23 European Championships, this time in the U23 European Championships in Tallinn. He finished eighth in 3: 46.29 minutes.
In 2016 he was the first Dutch indoor champion among adults. In the summer he took part in the European Championships in his native Netherlands, where he finished fourth in 3: 47.32 minutes over 1500 meters. At the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade in 2017, Douma was eliminated in advance. In August he moved into the semi-finals of the World Championships in London and finished 24th. In 2018 he became the first Dutch champion over 1500 meters outdoors. He successfully defended the title a year later. At the European Indoor Championships in 2019, however, he was sixth in his pre-run over 800 meters and was unable to advance to the next round and thus finished 27th overall. At the beginning of 2020 he equalized the Dutch record over 10 kilometers in 28:08 minutes in Valencia.
