Timo Benitz (born December 24, 1991 in Engen , Constance district ) is a German athlete who specializes in medium-distance running.

career path

Benitz studied aerospace engineering at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Friedrichshafen and completed an apprenticeship at the aircraft manufacturer Airbus in Ottobrunn . He studies at the TU Berlin .

Athletic career

In 2010, Benitz was German youth champion in the 3000 meter run . In the same year he started at the Junior World Championships in Moncton over 1500 meters , but was eliminated in the preliminary run. In 2011 he won the 1500 meter run at the German Junior Championships and came second in the 800 meter run at the German Championships in Kassel . At the U23 European Championships in Ostrava , he finished sixth over 1500 meters. Two years later he was at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Tampere again in the final and was fifth.

In May 2014, Benitz won the 1000-meter run at the meeting in Pliezhausen, ahead of the clear favorite Homiyu Tesfaye . With his time of 2: 16.90 min, he was now at the top of the world's best list of the year over the distance, which was rarely run internationally. In June he beat the two-time European indoor champion Adam Kszczot from Poland and the French record holder Pierre-Ambroise Bosse in his victory over 800 meters at the European Team Championship in Braunschweig . In July he became German champion in the 1,500 meter run. At the European Championships in Zurich in August 2014, he finished seventh over the same distance.

In 2017, Benitz became European team champion in Lille, northern France , and took 3rd place in the 1,500 meter run . Over this distance he was able to track into the semi-finals in a tactical run at the World Championships in London , in which he was eliminated. The General German University Sports Association also nominated him over 1500 meters for the Summer Universiade in Taipei , where he won the gold medal.

In 2018 Benitz was third in the German indoor championships over 3000 meters. A week later he won the runner-up title with the 3 x 1000 meter relay of LG farbtex Northern Black Forest . On March 10th, after three runner-up titles in previous years, he became the German cross-country champion in the middle distance for the first time. At the European Championships in Berlin , he took seventh place over 1500 meters. After the preliminary run, Benitz caused a stir because he was skeptical about the performance of Filip Ingebrigtsen on ARD , who caught up 60 meters behind after a fall.

Club affiliations

Benitz starts for the LG farbtex Northern Black Forest and is trained by Jörg Müller.
