The 111th German Athletics Championships were held on July 23 and 24, 2011 in the Kassel Auestadion .
The athletes' performances suffered, especially in the technical and sprint disciplines, from the rain and the low temperatures. Probably the strongest results were delivered by Betty Heidler with 76.04 m in the hammer throw and Christina Obergföll with 68.86 m in the javelin throw , both championship records .
Some favorites had to cancel their participation. High jumper Ariane Friedrich , hurdler Carolin Nytra , sprinter Verena Sailer and javelin thrower Till Wöschler were absent due to injuries, shot putter Ralf Bartels for personal reasons. Hurdler Georg Fleischhauer was not admitted to the finals despite the second-best time in the run-up because his trainer had given in his starting card too late.
As usual, some running competitions and the all-around competitions were outsourced:
- The cross-country runs took place on March 5th in Löningen - individual and team ratings: middle distance (women and men), long distance (men).
- The runners presented themselves for the half marathon with individual and team evaluation on April 17th in Griesheim .
- The 100 km road race was held in Jüterbog on April 30th - with individual ratings for women and men and a team rating for men.
- The German champions in the 10,000 meter run were determined on May 7th in the Essen sports park Am Hallo .
- The marathon with individual and team ratings for women and men took place on May 22nd as part of the Hamburg Marathon .
- The street walking over a distance of 20 km with individual and team ratings for women and men was held on June 11th in Erfurt .
- The mountain running championships were held on July 3rd in Oberstdorf - with individual and team ratings for women and men.
- The champions of the long relay teams were determined during the German Youth Championships on August 7th in Jena .
- The all-around championships took place in Vaterstetten from August 26th to 28th - also with individual and team ratings for women ( heptathlon ) and men ( decathlon ).
- The last road running championship over 10 km took place on September 10th in Oelde with individual and team ratings for women and men.
- The men started walking over 50 km on September 24th in Naumburg .
