After the end of the Second World War, sport in Hagenow was taken care of by the newly founded sports community (SG). Their soccer team rose in 1948 to the Mecklenburg state class , one of the top five divisions in the Soviet occupation zone . There she finished fifth among eight teams in 1948/49, but had to relegate a year later as bottom of the table in the Mecklenburg district class. This was after the introduction of the Oberliga and DDR-Liga in 1950/51 4th division. This season, the Hagenower started as a company sports community (BSG) unit with the city administration as the sponsoring company . After the introduction of the GDR districts , the division was renamed the Schwerin district class. In 1953 the footballers of the BSG unit got competition from the police sports association SG Dynamo Hagenow, which was able to place itself in the district class in some cases better than the BSG unit. In the 1955/56 season, the state trade in Hagenow took over the sponsorship of the BSG, which from then on was called BSG Empor. From 1956 to 1963 the district class was only the 5th division due to the introduction of the 2nd GDR League. For the 1961/62 season, the district class was reduced from four to two seasons. For the BSG Empor, ninth place was not enough for relegation, so the team had to compete in the district league this season. After the immediate resurgence, it was possible to secure membership in the district class for many years. In 1968 there was another change in the carrier operation when the Hagenow railway depot took over the BSG, which was renamed BSG Lokomotive. In 1977 she was promoted to the third-class district league Schwerin , which was followed by a constant change between the district league and the district class until 1982. In the meantime, the army sports association Vorwärts Hagenow was a new competitor who made it into the second-rate GDR league. Lok Hagenow remained in the district class until 1988. Thereafter, the BSG locomotive was relegated to the district league, from which it did not return until the end of GDR gaming operations.

ESV / Hagenower SV

In 1990 the system of company sports associations collapsed as a result of the economic changes after the political change in 1989/90 . After the Deutsche Reichsbahn had ended the financial support of the BSG, its members founded the railway sports club 48 Hagenow. It was continued as a multi-branch club. In 2006 the ESV was transformed into the Hagenower Sports Club. The first soccer team played for many years both as ESV and HSV under-class and only rose to the sixth-class Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Association League in 2016. In 2011 the SC AWO Hagenow joined the Hagenower SV. Its men's soccer team had always been better placed and most recently played in the seventh-class national league. From the 2011/12 season, Hagenower SV took over the Landesligaplatz. The handball and table tennis athletes also played at state level in 2016.
