Thomas Schneider (born November 7, 1988 in Forst , Cottbus district , GDR ) is a former German long sprinter .

Athletic career

In 2005, the then footballer came into contact with athletics for the first time as part of a student exchange in the USA . At a high school in Milwaukee , he took a liking to the 400-meter course . As a result, Schneider joined the LC Cottbus under coach Jochen Wiedemann. In 2008 the training group switched to SC Potsdam .

Schneider celebrated his first successes in 2007, when he won silver at the U20 European Championships in Hengelo and bronze at the German Youth Championships over 400 meters with the German 4 x 400 meter relay . At the German Junior Championships , Schneider won gold over 400 meters in 2009, after taking silver the year before.

In the hope of a relay deployment at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin , he decided not to take part in the U23 European Championships , but was ultimately not used. In the 2010 season Schneider improved his fastest time to 46.03 s and became German runner-up . He was then nominated as a member of the German 4 x 400 meter relay for the 2010 European Championships in Barcelona , where he reached the final as the final runner and came fourth there.

At the 2011 European Indoor Championships in Paris, Schneider won the silver medal in the 400-meter run. In 2012 Schneider won the bronze medal with the relay ( Jonas Plass , Kamghe Gaba , Eric Krüger , Thomas Schneider) at the European Championships in Helsinki in 3: 01.77 minutes. At the Olympic Games in London, the relay was eliminated in the run-up.

In 2018 Schneider became German indoor champion over 400 m. However, renewed Achilles tendon complaints forced him to break off the summer season.

In 2019 he did not start in the indoor season and, following the signals from his body, announced his retirement from competitive sports in mid-March.

Thomas Schneider had a competition weight of 79 kg with a height of 1.85 m.

Since 2017 he started for TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen .
