Julian Flügel (born April 18, 1986 in Fulda ) is a German long-distance runner .

Life

Julian Flügel was born in Fulda in 1986 and started running for the first time at the age of 16 . He came to PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel via LG Baunatal-Fuldabrück , for which he started until 2010 before moving to LG Telis Finanz Regensburg in 2011 . From 2013, after his personal record of over 5000 meters , Flügel preferably ran longer distances and made his marathon debut as the best German at the Hamburg Marathon in 2014 in a time of 2:15:39 h, and in 2015 he switched to TSG 08 Roth .

Julian Flügel qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in January 2016 through his time at the Berlin Marathon 2015 (2:13:57 h) , after the German Olympic standard for the marathon distance had been set at 2:14:00 h. In the meantime, Flügel, together with Philipp Pflieger (2:12:50 h, Berlin 2015), hired a lawyer on behalf of other athletes to take legal action against "DLV and DOSB lawsuit for disability of athletes in the exercise of their profession and unreasonable disadvantage".

Flügel describes himself as a "semi-professional" because, in addition to his career as an athlete, he works 30 hours a week as an auditor in the finance department of a forklift manufacturer .

At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he finished 71st in 2:20:47 h.
