Philipp Pflieger (born July 16, 1987 in Sindelfingen , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German athlete who specializes in long-distance runs .

career path

After graduation Pflieger went from Sindelfingen to Regensburg, graduated at the local university with bachelor in political science , media studies and history , and professional marathon runners decided to become.

Athletic career

At first, Pflieger played football for a club, but he liked running better, so he switched to athletics at the age of 10.

In 2006, Pflieger started in Wattenscheid for the first time at the German youth championships and took third place in the U20 championships over 3000 meters.

In 2007 he came in 7th place in the U23 age group in Hanover at the German junior championships in the 1500 meter run and won bronze with the 3 x 1000 meter relay.

In 2008, Pflieger took 8th place over 5000 m at the German championships in Nuremberg and third place three weeks later at the German junior championships in Recklinghausen .

In 2009, Pflieger became German junior champion (U23) over 5000 meters in Göttingen and finished fourth in the German 10-kilometer championships in Otterndorf . Internationally, he finished 7th at the U23 European Championships .

In 2010, Pflieger took bronze at the German championships in Braunschweig over 5000 meters and at the German 10-kilometer championships in Ohrdruf , where he also came in 5th at the German championships in the 10,000-meter run .

In 2011, Pflieger was only able to take part in competitions again at the end of the year due to a broken foot.

In 2012 he became German runner-up over 5000 meters behind Arne Gabius , after having previously won the German championship title over 10,000 meters . In 2012, Pflieger was also the German champion in the 10-kilometer road race, both individually and with the team, and German runner-up in the 3 x 1000 meter relay. He won bronze at the German cross-country championships over the middle distance and gold with a team. In his first international championship participation in the active, he finished 15th in the 5000 meter run at the European Championships in Helsinki .

In 2013, Pflieger was again the German runner-up over 5000 meters behind Arne Gabius. Over 10,000 meters he finished second behind Homiyu Tesfaye . In 2014, Pflieger suffered a hairline crack in his sacrum and had to postpone his plans for the summer. At the German championships he finished third behind Richard Ringer and Arne Gabius over 5000 meters . In the 10-kilometer road race , he came fourth in the individual and won gold with the team. At his marathon premiere in Frankfurt he did not finish.

In 2015, Pflieger concentrated more on road running. At the German championships in the 10-kilometer road race , he took third place in the individual and won silver with the team. At the German half marathon championships, he won gold in both the individual and the team. At the German cross-country championships, he reached 5th place in the middle distance. At the Berlin Marathon , Pflieger ran in 2:12:50 hours. his first marathon to the finish. By this time, he had also met the norm for the 2016 Olympic Games , which was later revised downwards .

In 2016, the 2017 World Championships were not a goal for Pflieger in his planning because he wanted to gain more marathon experience. At the European Championships , he started in the half marathon and came in 33rd place. In March 2017, Pflieger won gold with the German cross-country championships over the long distance (10.28 km) and with the team. In April, however, he had to cancel the half marathon in Berlin and the Hamburg marathon due to thigh problems. At the beginning of September he took third place in the German championships in the 10-kilometer road race and won gold with the team. Pflieger did his fourth marathon in Berlin at the end of September. After running a pace of around 2:11 hours for a long time, he had to break off in a dramatic way between kilometers 39 and 40.

At the half marathon in Barcelona in mid-February, he increased his half marathon record, which was around three years old, by seven seconds to 1:03:44 h, which placed Pflieger in 11th place. In 2018 Pflieger wants to take part in the European Championships, but still had to meet the standard of 2:14:00 h. He achieved this with a precision landing at the Hamburg Marathon at the end of April. He was nominated by the DLV for the European Athletics Championships 2018 .

Until 2017, Pflieger was a member of the B-squad of the German Athletics Association (DLV) .

Club affiliations

Philipp Pflieger has been running for the LT Haspa Marathon Hamburg since 2020, before that he ran since 2008 for the LG Telis Finanz Regensburg / Stammverein Förderverein der LG Regensburg . From 1997 to 2007 he was at VfL Sindelfingen and previously from 1995 to 1996 at TSV Dagersheim .
