The Greifswalder SV 04 was a German sports club in Greifswald , Mecklenburg-Vorpommern .

history

After the bankruptcy of the traditional club Greifswalder SC in 2003 , the soccer department of Greifswalder SC played at ESV / Empor Greifswald. On January 1, 2004, after a great effort within the city, the merger of the three clubs ESV / Empor Greifswald, SSV Grün-Schwarz Greifswald and Greifswalder SV 98 became the new large club Greifswalder SV 04 e. V. founded as a multi-branch association. Greifswalder SV 98 resigned from the large club at the beginning of 2010 due to different ideas from the individual departments. On July 1, 2015, the club merged with FC Pommern Greifswald to form the new club Greifswalder FC .

structure

Greifswalder SV 04 had been a pure football club since 2010. In the 2013/14 season there were 3 men's, 16 junior, two women and two girls' teams in play.

With 450 members, the GSV 04 was one of the clubs with the largest number of members in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. With the merger in 2004, performance-oriented football from the youngsters to the men's team was reunited and a successor to the insolvent Greifswalder SC was established. Children and youth sports played an outstanding role, as over 350 club members are 18 years of age and younger. Competitive and popular sports were also promoted. The cooperation with several Greifswald schools was exemplary throughout the country. A large number of sports groups at the schools were supervised by teachers or trainers from the GSV. Until 2010, the athletics and badminton departments belonged to the club.

The soccer department of Greifswalder SV 04 saw itself primarily as a training club and was responsible for the DFB training base. Numerous young talents were trained here, of which players like Dennis Wegner and Charbel Chougourou made their way into paid football. Since 2005, Greifswalder SV 04 has run the state performance base in this sport. The youth department was one of the most powerful in the state. For years, Greifswald has been one of the largest talent suppliers for FC Hansa Rostock and for the federal state's selection teams and has continued the extremely successful youth work of the predecessor clubs BSG KKW Greifswald and Greifswalder SC , whose experienced trainers form the foundation of the department.

The first men's team was the club's figurehead and started in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Association League in 2003 . In the 2006/07 season, the promotion to the Oberliga Nordost could be realized early . Responsible for this was primarily the former Bundesliga coach Andreas Zachhuber , who already played for BSG KKW Greifswald in 1986 and helped his former teammate and current department head Jörg Seering to build on old Greifswald football traditions. GSV 04 only failed to make a direct march into the Regionalliga during the 2007/08 season in the two relegation games against FC Sachsen Leipzig (first leg: 2: 4 in Greifswald in front of 5054 spectators, second leg: 2: 2 in Leipzig in front of 9,390 spectators). In September 2008, department head Jörg Seering, who was only re-elected in February of that year, resigned from his position for professional reasons. After Patrick Jahn and Daniel Köhn, two top performers, left the club after the first half of the 2008/09 season and coach Andreas Zachhuber moved to FC Hansa Rostock in the spring, the team fell apart in terms of performance and only ended up in eleventh place at the end of the season. The newly formed team did not have the necessary performance for the league in 2009/10. After the main sponsor Dong Energy ceased its involvement at the end of 2009, the association ran into financial difficulties. Despite a change of coach, the first team rose to the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Association League at the end of the season. After a year of upheaval and much turbulence, the league could be secured there. In the spring of 2011 a new football department was elected, which managed to lead the club back into calm waters and to focus more on the training of youngsters. Almost all current players have learned their football ABC in the traditional Greifswald football forge. Since July 1, 2015, the soccer teams have been playing as Greifswalder FC. Its first team received the start authorization for the association league.

People's Stadium

The Greifswald “Volksstadion” was opened on May 29, 1927. The building with the grandstand and the changing rooms dates from this time. After the Second World War , the steps and benches in front of the grandstand were added. In the 1980s, a three-meter-high fence was erected around the playing field, but it was dismantled after the bankruptcy of Greifswalder SC in spring 2003. At the beginning of the 1990s, the main square and the running track were completely renovated and a floodlight system was installed for the main and two side squares. Two side courts were provided with artificial turf . There is also another lawn area available. The previous record attendance was achieved in a friendly match in 1997. 14,000 visitors saw FC Bayern Munich 4-0 against Greifswalder SC. Despite a sixth place, the team had to withdraw from the league at the end of the 04/05 season for personnel reasons. In the 2005/06 season the team played in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regional league . The state championship and state cup were won with confidence. In March 2006, the team was able to qualify again for the league in the promotion round in Eutin and thus create direct promotion . In the 2006/07 season, with fourth place, the goal of staying up at the start of the season was safely achieved. The second team just missed defending their title in the national league with second place. In the 2007/08 season, the first team came second, celebrating the best result in many years. In the 2008/09 season, the first team occupied eighth place in the table as a climber in the Regionalliga Nord and thus had to relegate back to the top division after a year. There the team finished in an excellent third place in the 2009/10 season and only failed in the last game due to direct promotion. The badminton department is one of the largest and most successful in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is responsible for the state performance center . Successes at North German and German championships characterize the traditionally excellent youth work of the club. The home games of the badminton department take place in sports hall 3. At the end of the 2009/10 season, the badminton department left Greifswalder SV 04 and has since played under the old name Greifswalder SV 98 again.
