Ørsted (until November 2017 Dong Energy), based in Fredericia , Denmark, is an energy company ; the company is the world market leader in offshore wind energy .

background

Ørsted was founded in March 1972 as Dansk Naturgas A / S by the Kingdom of Denmark , initiated by the then government Jens Otto Krag III . The name was changed in 1973 to Dansk Olie og Naturgas A / S , from 2002 only the derived abbreviation "Dong" was used. In 2006, Dong Energy A / S was formed from the merger of Dong, Elsam, Energi E2, NEsa, KE Holding and Frederiksberg Elnet Group. In October 2016, the company announced the construction of its 1000th offshore wind turbine in the German offshore wind farm Gode Wind II . The oil and natural gas business has meanwhile been sold to Ineos , whereby the company name became obsolete and was changed to Ørsted, named after the Danish scientist Hans Christian Ørsted , in November 2017 .

The state of Denmark held a share of around 76% in the company until 2013/14. In 2014, it was decided to sell 19% of the shares to the investment bank Goldman Sachs and two pension funds controlled by this bank, with Goldman Sachs also being granted veto rights. As a result, the then Danish government coalition, the Helle Thorning-Schmidt I cabinet, broke up in February 2014 .

strategy

According to Ørsted, the goal is to reliably deliver clean energy. To this end, the company formulated “Strategy 85/15” in 2009. According to Ørsted, 85% of the company's own electricity and heat production was generated from fossil fuels in 2009 . The share of renewable energies was 15%. By 2040, Ørsted wanted to reverse this ratio and generate 85% of its own electricity and heat production from renewables and 15% from natural gas . This strategy has since become obsolete. According to Ørsted, it will produce climate-neutral energy as early as 2025 and completely dispense with fossil fuels. This goal is to be achieved through greater use of biomass for heat and power generation and the expansion of offshore wind energy and other renewable energies . By 2040, Ørsted also wants to be CO 2 -neutral in the area of suppliers .
