Borssele is an offshore wind farm under construction or in the planning stage in the Dutch Exclusive Economic Zone in the North Sea . It consists of four sub-areas with around 350 megawatts each and a fifth small area (20 MW) for experimental purposes. With a total of around 1,500 megawatts, it will be the largest wind farm in the Netherlands to date.
location
The area of Borsselle I and II is located about 22 kilometers off the coast of the Dutch province of Zeeland at a water depth between 14 and 38 meters. Borssele I and II cover an area of about 128 km². The borsselle III and IV sub-areas are about 25 kilometers off the coast.
Partial areas I and II
Ørsted (formerly DONG Energy ) won the tender for the operation of sub-areas I and II in July 2016. The company will receive 72.70 euros per megawatt hour for the first 15 years of operation . The electricity produced is then remunerated according to market prices. With these values, at that time it was considered the offshore wind farm with the lowest electricity generation costs in the world. In July 2017, DONG announced that it had selected Siemens as its partner for delivery and maintenance. 94 Siemens SWT-8.0-154 turbines with an output of 8 megawatts were ordered. This results in a total output of 752 megawatts. Mathematically, this power supplies almost one million households.
The first work for the construction of the wind turbines in these two areas should originally take place at the end of 2019. The first foundations were installed in mid-January 2020, the first turbines followed in April 2020. On April 28, 2020, electricity was fed into the grid for the first time. The full commissioning of the wind farm is planned for the fourth quarter of 2020.
Partial areas III and IV
The two sub-areas III and IV are to have a total installed capacity of 730 MW, which is to be generated with 77 wind turbines of the MHI Vestas V164-9.5MW type .
history
On July 8, 2016, the details of the tender for sub-areas III and IV were announced by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, which was similar to the regulations of Borssele I and II. The call for tenders for the two projects ran from September 15 to 29, 2016.
The start of construction for the wind farm is planned for the fourth quarter of 2019 [out of date] . The wind farm is scheduled to go into operation in 2021.
compensation
On December 12, 2016, a consortium founded by Shell , Eneco , Van Oord and Diamond Generating Europe (a subsidiary of Mitsubishi ) called Blauwwind II CV was awarded the contract to operate the two areas. The consortium will receive a feed-in tariff of EUR 54.50 per megawatt hour for the first 15 years of operation ; then the electricity produced will be remunerated at market prices. This means that the hammer price actually realized is less than half of the previously set maximum price (EUR 119.75 per megawatt hour).
Partial area V
The partial area V is suitable for about 20 MW of available power. It is intended to be used to demonstrate innovative technologies. The focus is on reducing costs for offshore wind farms and promoting the Dutch economy. The tender for the partial area was carried out by the end of 2017. The result of the tender was announced in April 2018. Two wind turbines of the type V164 with an output of 9.5 megawatts each are to be installed in the area. Innovations such as erosion protection, a coating system or a new connection between tower and foundation are to be tested. The two turbines are being built by a consortium led by Van Oord Renewable Finance , Investri Offshore and Green Giraffe Holding . The consortium will receive research funding of 15 million euros as well as funding for electricity purchase of 35 million euros. The project is scheduled to go into operation by 2021. The two wind turbines can theoretically supply 25,000 Dutch households with electricity.
business
Ørsted has been using a site in the port of Vlissingen as a maintenance and service base since 2020 .
