Van Oord (full name Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors ) is a Dutch , global company specializing in dredging , land reclamation , hydraulic engineering and coastal engineering . Van Oord is one of the four world leaders in the industry.
In addition to its main business, the dredging industry , Van Oord is also active in the installation of offshore structures for the oil and gas industry and the energy industry ( offshore wind farms ). Among other things, the company holds 10% of the shares in the Dutch Gemini offshore wind farm .
As a shipping company, Van Oord operates around 100 work vessels , including around 70 different dredgers and dredgers.
history
The company goes back to the middle of the 19th century. It was founded in 1868 by the entrepreneur Govert van Oord. A short time later, Van Oord took over the dredging plant from Adriaan Volker, which was built in 1854. Over the decades Van Oord grew through numerous projects and acquisitions of similar companies, including some of the oldest and largest hydraulic engineering companies in the Netherlands, such as the dredging division of Ballast Nedam and Hollandse Aanneming Maatschappij (HAM) in 2003 .
Among the many water construction projects in which Van Oord or its subsidiaries was involved include, among others, such well-known as the construction of the North Sea Canal , the IJsselmeer - Afsluitdijk , the ports of Surabaya and Jubail , the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier , the artificial island for Hong Kong International Airport , the artificial Palm Islands in Dubai and the Maasvlakte 2 extension of the port of Rotterdam .
In July 2018 it was announced that Van Oord would take over the MPI Offshore division from Vroon Groop at the end of September 2018 .
