The OMX Copenhagen 20 (formerly Københavns Fondsbørs Index , KFX) is a share index of the Scandinavian stock exchange OMX and is composed of the 20 largest companies on the Copenhagen stock exchange . It was the most important Danish stock exchange index until February 1, 2013 , when it was replaced by the OMX C20 CAP .

calculation

The OMX Copenhagen 20 is a price index in which the 20 largest and most liquid stocks on the OMX Copenhagen Stock Exchange are listed. The shares are determined depending on the market capitalization ; for the inclusion of the index itself, a high value is placed on the trading liquidity . A limited measurement period is considered in the calculation and the individual values are calculated in Danish kroner . The basis is the bid prices .

The index level is determined solely on the basis of share prices and only adjusted for income from subscription rights and special payments. Corporate actions such as stock splits have no (distorting) influence on the index. The calculation is updated every second during OMX trading hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CET . The composition of the index is revised twice a year (June and December).

The export-oriented companies play a prominent role in the leading index OMX Copenhagen 20. Heavyweights here are, for example, the AP Møller-Mærsk shipyard , the pharmaceutical manufacturer Novo Nordisk and the world's leading wind turbine manufacturer Vestas . In addition to these industrial companies, only Danske Bank has an outstanding weight. In Germany, the certificates industry (e.g. ABN AMRO ) in particular uses the OMXC 20 as an underlying for its investment products.

history

Historical overview

OMX Copenhagen 20 Index 1989–2012

The index started on July 3, 1989 under the name Københavns Fondsbørs Index (KFX) with a base value of 100 points. The calculation was made on a monthly basis until 1922.

On December 5, 1997 the KFX closed with 200.92 points for the first time above the limit of 200 points and on March 21, 2000 with 300.20 points for the first time above the 300 point mark. On October 24, 2000, the index reached a record high with a closing level of 354.08 points. After the speculative bubble in the technology sector ( dot-com bubble ) burst , the Danish benchmark index fell to a low of 169.04 points by March 12, 2003. That was a decrease of 52.3 percent since March 2000. March 12, 2003 means the end of the downward slide. From the spring of 2003, the KFX began to rise again.

In January 2005, the Scandinavian community Stock Exchange took over OMX , the Copenhagen Stock Exchange . To reflect this change, the Københavns Fondsbørs Index has been renamed OMX Copenhagen 20 .

On February 2, 2006, the stock market barometer ended trading above the limit of 400 points for the first time with 400.55 points, and on May 23, 2007 with 501.74 points for the first time above the 500 point mark. On October 11, 2007, the Danish benchmark index closed at 517.67 points. The increase since March 2003 is 206.2 percent.

In the course of the international financial crisis , which had its origin in the US real estate crisis in summer 2007, the OMX index began to decline again. On October 8, 2008, it closed with 292.82 points below the 300 point mark. The share index reached a new low on March 6, 2009, when it ended trading at 213.11 points. Since the all-time high on October 11, 2007, this corresponds to a decline of 58.8 percent. It is the biggest fall in the history of the OMX Copenhagen 20.

March 6, 2009 marks the turning point of the downward slide. From spring 2009, the Danish benchmark index was on the way up again. By January 18, 2011, it rose 122.9 percent to a closing level of 475.02 points. The weakening of the global economy and the worsening of the euro crisis led to a slump in the index. On August 25, 2011, the OMX Copenhagen 20 ended trading at 335.10 points. The loss since January 18, 2011 is 29.5 percent.

The announcement of new bond purchase programs by the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve , which are basically unlimited, led to a recovery in prices on the stock market. The monetary stimulus played a bigger role in the price formation than the global economic slowdown and the state of the companies. On January 11, 2013, the index marked an all-time high with a closing level of 523.48 points. The profit since August 25, 2011 is 56.2 percent.
