The GN Store Nord (Engl. Great Northern ) is a group of companies , based in Denmark , which was founded in 1869 and on January 1, 1872 telegraphic connection from Europe over Russia in the Far East opened. In 1928, a holding company was created as the parent company .

history

The GN was created on the initiative of Carl Frederik Tietgens through the amalgamation of several newly founded multinational European telegraph companies and an expanded business model. Tietgen reached an agreement with the Russian tsar to exclusively lay and operate submarine cables in Russia and to have a line laid through Siberia . In 1870 the GN pulled the first submarine cable on land in Hong Kong . Around 1900 the GN owned two networks, each around 6000 km in length, in Northern Europe and East Asia . One connected France , Great Britain , Denmark, Sweden , Finland and Iceland , the other Russia, China , Hong Kong and Japan , and both connected the lifeline through Russia. The effort turned out to be immense and required a subsequent multiplication of the share capital . But from 1918 to 1945, for political reasons, no competing alliance could be established, which made GN the most profitable company in Denmark.

After the Second World War , the company carried out a fundamental restructuring .

After the turn of the millennium , most employees are involved in medical technology and thus achieve the greatest income. In addition to this division GN ReSound the hearing, the division is GN Netcom with headsets of the brand Jabra's second most important business area.

In 2005 GN took over the German Interton Electronic Hörgeräte from Bergisch Gladbach. The German branch is located in Münster.
