The Gunfleet Sands offshore wind farm is located on the coast of the United Kingdom in the south-western North Sea . The wind farm has an installed capacity of 184 MW . It is seven kilometers southeast of Clacton-on-Sea , Essex .
The project was created in two phases. In the first phase, 30 wind turbines were installed and in the second 18 systems. Phase 1 included a total area of 10 km², phase 2 of 7.5 km². Phase 3 is a demonstration project for a larger type of wind turbine.
construction
After the project was approved in 2008, construction of the wind farm began in the same year. The first turbine was installed in April 2009. In August 2009 the first electricity was produced and fed into the power grid. The project was completed in June 2010.
technology
Each turbine has an installed capacity of 3.6 MW. The rotor diameter is 107 m, the total height 129 m. Monopile foundations were used to anchor the systems . These have a diameter of about 5 m and are up to 50 m long and up to 40 m anchored in the sea floor.
business
The wind farm is owned by an operator consortium of which 50.1% is owned by DONG Energy , 24.95% by Marubeni and 24.95% by DBJ.
The service center for operation and maintenance is located in Brightlingsea .
Demonstration project
In 2012, the approval for the Gunfleet Sands Demonstration Project was granted within the so-called Phase 3. In this area, two Siemens 6 MW turbines were installed in the wind farm area from 2012 to 2013. Electricity from these two systems was fed into the power grid from April 2013.
