Brightlingsea is a coastal town in Essex ( England ) in the Tendring District with about 8500 inhabitants. It lies roughly between Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea at the mouth of the River Colne in the English Channel.
The traditional industries mainly include fishing (with a famous oyster fishery) and shipbuilding. With the decline of these industries, the city has become a commuter city and a popular retirement destination.
The city has an active recreational boating scene. The Brightlingsea Sail Club hosts sailing competitions and has produced many champions at both international and Olympic level.
In the center of town is Jacobs Hall, the oldest timber building in England. Victoria Square in the center of the city is mainly home to shops.
