Tendring is a district in Essex , England . It is named after the village of Tendring , but the administrative seat is Clacton-on-Sea . The District stretches from the River Stour in the north to the River Colne in the south. The area thus forms a peninsula protruding into the North Sea .

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and resulted from the merger of the cities of Brightlingsea , Clacton-on-Sea and Harwich with the Urban District Finton and Walton and the Rural District Tendring.

The Tendring district maintains town twinning with Biberach an der Riß (Germany), Świdnica (Poland) and Valence (France).
