Epping Forest is a district in Essex , England . It is named after the Epping Forest , which covers a large part of this area. The administrative headquarters are in Epping . In the southwest, Epping Forest borders Greater London .

The district was formed on April 1, 1974. It emerged from the merger of the urban districts of Chigwell, Epping and Waltham Holy Cross and a large part of the rural district of Epping and Ongar.

Epping Forest is divided into four roughly equal parts by the M11 and M25 motorways .

The Central Line of the London Underground crossed Epping Forest from southwest to northeast and operated while the following metro stations: Buckhurst Hill , Chigwell , Debden , Epping , Loughton and Theydon Bois .

The railroad only touches the district on the southeastern edge (stations in Sawbridgeworth and Roydon). The museum line Epping Ongar Railway runs between Epping and Ongar since October 2004 .

A song on the Genesis album Selling England By The Pound is called The Battle of Epping Forest and refers to a real gang war in the forest of the same name.
