Brentwood is an administrative district with borough status in Essex in England . To the west it borders on Greater London .

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was created from the merger of the urban districts of Brentwood and Chelmsford and part of the rural district of Epping and Ongar. It initially had the status of a district and was elevated to a borough on April 27, 1993 by royal decree.

It is named after the city of Brentwood , which is also the administrative center. Originally, however, the area was called "Burnt Wood" ( burned wood ), after the vast forest areas in which charcoalers once made charcoal. Even today, the area is covered in woodland, including Shenfield Common, Hartswood, Weald Country Park, and Thorndon Country Park.
