Covered freight car for Pan Am Railways

Pan Am Railways (PAR) is a US -amerikanisches Class 2 -Eisenbahnunternehmen in the northeast of the country. Until the end of March 2006, the company operated under the name Guilford Rail System . The company is based Billerica ( Massachusetts ).

The route network covers around 2,600 km in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

history

Timothy Mellon from Guilford, Connecticut founded Guilford Transportation Industries in 1977 . In 1981 the company entered the railroad business with the purchase of the Maine Central Railroad (MEC) and its subsidiary Portland Terminal. In June 1983, the network was expanded to include the Boston and Maine Railroad (B&M) with the subsidiary Springfield Terminal (ST). From then on, the railway activities were bundled under the name ST Rail System .

Another expansion took place in 1984 when the company acquired the Delaware and Hudson Railway (D&H) from the Norfolk and Western Railway . At the end of the 1980s, labor disputes led to a change in the corporate structure in order to still be able to make necessary savings. So the Maine Central and the B&M were rented to the Springfield Terminal. An attempt to do the same with the Delaware & Hudson failed. As a result, the D&H went bankrupt in 1988 and sold to the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1991 . The remaining network was marketed from 1995 under the name Guilford Rail System .

In 1998, Guilford acquired the name, color and logo of the former Pan Am airline and used it for its own airline. In 2005, the company's freight cars began to be painted in PanAm colors and with the logo. In March 2006, Guilford Transportation Industries was renamed Pan Am Systems and the rail subsidiary was renamed Pan Am Railways .

In June 2020, it was announced that majority owner Timothy Mellon and the remaining shareholders had hired Bank of Montreal (BMO) to find a buyer for Pan Am Railways.
