Colchester is an administrative district with borough status in Essex , England . It is named after its administrative seat Colchester . It extends from Dedham Vale on the Suffolk border in the north to Mersea Island in the south. Other larger towns are West Mersea and Wivenhoe .
The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and resulted from the merger of the city of Colchester, the urban districts of West Mersea and Wivenhoe and the rural districts of Lexden and Winstree.
