Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM), in English "Ports and Railways of Mozambique", is Mozambique's state railway company . It is divided into the three companies CFM-Süd, CFM-Zentral and CFM-Nord. Parts of this network have been privatized since 2004. All three can be assigned to the most important ports in Mozambique: Maputo , Beira and Nacala . The routes of the individual companies are only connected to each other via routes in neighboring countries: CFM-South via the Limpopo Line to Harare and from there via the Beira Corridor to CFM-Zentral, from there via the Malawi Line to Nkaya in Malawi and from there via Nayuchi and Cuamba to Nacala to CFM-Nord. Trade with the Republic of South Africa in particular is carried out on these transport routes, often with locomotives and freight wagons from Transnet Freight Rail . All routes are cape- lane , with the exception of the route between Maputo and South Africa, they are single-track.

The CFM-Süd operate a route network of 1070 kilometers, which consists of three routes: Maputo – Ressano Garcia on the border with the Republic of South Africa; Maputo– Goba on the border with Swaziland , Maputo– Malvernia on the border with Zimbabwe (Limpopo line) and connection to the National Railways of Zimbabwe . The superstructure is in very good condition and allows an axle load of 20 tons. In 1984 97 diesel and 85 steam locomotives as well as eleven railcars were available. In addition, CFM-Süd has 3299 freight cars and 91 passenger coaches. Since Maputo is a very important export port for South Africa, the CFM-South is equipped accordingly.

CFM central

The CFM-Zentral has a route network of 994 kilometers, which consists of three routes: Beira - Mutare in Zimbabwe (Beira Corridor); Beira - Makhanga Border Station in Malawi (Malawi Line); In Dona Ana on the Malawi line, another route branches off to Moatize . This so-called Sena line to Moatize was expanded in 2006 for 165 million US dollars. The plan is to continue the route from Moatize to the northeast via Mwanza and Blantyre (Malawi) in order to also reach Nacala by a shorter route. This has been estimated to cost one billion US dollars. The permissible axle load is 16 tons. In 1984, the CFM-Zentral had 61 diesel and 22 steam locomotives and eight railcars. In addition, 3330 freight cars and 84 passenger cars were available. Only a fraction of this is likely to be operational at the moment.

CFM North

The CFM-Nord belong to the port of Nacala. Its main route with a length of 918 kilometers leads from Nacala to Nampula and Lichinga (formerly: Vila Cabral) on Lake Malawi . From Cuamba a branch leads to Malawi and connects to the route network of the Malawi railway. In 1984 this railway had 30 diesel and 26 steam locomotives (six of which were operational in 2004) and six smaller railcars. 967 freight cars of various types and 44 passenger coaches are available for transport. The condition of the superstructure is poor in places and only allows speeds of 25 km / h. The CFM-Nord were privatized, they are operated by the investor group Insitec , which also operates the rail transport in Malawi .

Quelimane – Mocaba route

The city of Quelimane is the terminus of a 120 km long railway line to Mocuba in the hinterland. Quelimane has a regional airport and a river port that can also be used by larger ocean-going vessels that provide sea transport connections to Maputo, South Africa and even directly to Europe. In addition to freight, travel takes place on the route.
