Nampula is the economic center of the north of Mozambique and the capital of the province of Nampula of the same name .

Nampula is located in the district of the same name , in the center of the Nampula province.

history

From 1896 the Portuguese led campaigns against the kingdoms of Macuana , Maurusa and Mongol in order to bring the north of what is now Mozambique under their control. In 1907 Nampula was founded here as a military base. From 1930 there was a railway connection, which quickly increased the size of the place. In 1934 Nampula was elevated to a small town ( Vila ), in 1956 to a city ( Cidade ). In the course of the Portuguese colonial war , which raged in the region from 1964, the Portuguese military base gained in importance. In 1967 the Portuguese colonial government moved the headquarters of the army from the Ilha de Moçambique here.

Nampula remained an important military base even after Mozambique gained independence in 1975. This is where the Mozambique Military Academy ( Academia Militar de Moçambique ) is located.

In October 2017, the mayor, Mahamudo Amurrane ( MDM ), was shot dead in Nampula.

The city of Nampula became a focal point for war refugees during the colonial war, but especially in the civil war that followed. The hope for a better life in the city has increased the number of inhabitants through steady immigration. In 2017, 743,125 people lived here.

Since 1940 Nampula has been the Roman Catholic bishopric, which was elevated to the seat of the Archdiocese of Nampula in 1984 . The two-towered cathedral "Nossa Senhora de Fátima" is popularly known as Gina Lollobrigida .

Culture and sights

Nampula has numerous buildings from the Portuguese colonial era. The tree-lined squares are typical of the region.

Nampula is a business, banking and administrative city. Cotton, vegetables, maize and peanuts are grown in the region.

The city is on the Nacala - Lichinga railway line . A branch line and a road lead to the port of Lumbo on the Mozambique Strait across from Ilha de Moçambique. The road network around Nampula is very well developed.

Nampula has an airport. The Mozambican domestic airline Air Corridor was based here until it ceased operations in 2008.

The city is home to the Universidade Católica de Moçambique (UCM), a private university that was founded by the Catholic Church in 1996 and whose degrees are state-recognized.
