Abel Luís da Silva Costa Xavier (born November 30, 1972 in Nampula , Mozambique ) is a former Portuguese soccer player and today's soccer coach . After his conversion to Islam , his name is Faisal Xavier .

Club career

He started his career at the Portuguese club CD Estrela Amadora . In 1989, Xavier made his professional debut for the Portuguese. In 1993 he moved to the famous Portuguese club Benfica Lisbon. In 1995, Xavier dared to move abroad. This was followed by positions in Bari , Oviedo , Eindhoven , Everton , Liverpool and at Galatasaray Istanbul .

In 2004 Hannover 96 signed him . He could not convince Lower Saxony, so he left the club after only a few months. Until the end of the 2006/2007 season he was under contract with the English Premier League club Middlesbrough FC . Before that he played for three games at AS Roma . In September 2005, he was tested positive for Metandienon in the doping control after the UEFA Cup game Middlesbrough against Skoda Xanthi and suspended for one year.

From June 15, 2007, Xavier played in the United States for Los Angeles Galaxy .

A year after his engagement, Abel Xavier was released from Galaxies on July 18, 2008. He later criticized his former coach Ruud Gullit and Major League Soccer in an interview .

National team

He played 20 times for the Portuguese national soccer team from 1993 to 2002 and scored two goals. In the semifinals of the EM 2000 against France, Xavier became a tragic figure. In extra time, he owed a controversial hand penalty, which Zinédine Zidane converted. The Portuguese were eliminated after Golden Goal .

Coaching career

In the summer of 2013 he took over the coaching position of a club for the first time with SC Olhanense , but was dismissed the following October after two wins in eight league games. Xavier also only worked for a short time at SC Farense and Desportivo Aves . Between 2016 and 2019 he was the national coach of Mozambique .

Personal

The Portuguese footballer has converted to Islam. Abel Xavier, who changed his first name to Faisal, has now ended his career and wants to concentrate on humanitarian and social work in the future.
