The Catholic University of Mozambique ( Portuguese Universidade Católica de Moçambique - UCM) is a state-recognized university in Mozambique .

The university was founded in 1995 by the Roman Catholic Bishops' Conference of Mozambique. At the time, higher education in Mozambique was only available in the capital, Maputo . The UCM was founded with the intention of making higher education accessible in central and northern Mozambique. The university is open to students and staff regardless of their religion.

Around 3000 students attend the UCM today. The rector of the university is the Catholic priest Alberto Ferreira . The rectorate is in Beira .

history

The university was recognized by Mozambique in 1995 and inaugurated in August 1996 with the opening of the Faculty of Economics and Administration in Beira and the Faculty of Law in Nampula . In August 1998 the Faculty of Education and Communication opened in Nampula. In January 1999 the Faculty of Agriculture opened in Cuamba and in August 1999 the Faculty of Medicine Beira. In September 2002 the Faculty of Tourism Management and Information Technology was opened in Pemba . In 2008, further locations opened in Chimoio and Tete , and in 2009 in Quelimane .

From 1996 to 2006, Father Filipe Couto was the rector of the university.
